The Indian car market always gets extra lively before the festive season, and this year is no exception. September 2025 has a packed calendar of new launches, with automakers trying to cash in on the buying sentiment that peaks around Diwali. People in India often wait for this time of the year to purchase a new vehicle, and brands know it well. From affordable SUVs to luxury EVs, here are the six major models hitting showrooms this month.

VinFast VF6 and VF7 – A New EV Brand Steps In

The biggest talking point is the entry of VinFast, a Vietnamese EV manufacturer that has been making waves globally. On September 6, it will launch two electric SUVs – VF6 and VF7 – marking its official start in India.

The VF6 is more compact and will lock horns with familiar names like the Hyundai Creta EV and MG ZS EV. With a 59.6 kWh battery and an estimated range of 480 km, it promises solid practicality. On the other hand, the VF7 is aimed at larger midsize SUVs such as the Tata Harrier EV and Mahindra XEV 9e. It packs a 70.8 kWh battery and a slightly lower range of 450 km.

Pricing is expected to be aggressive: ₹20–25 lakh for VF6 and ₹25–30 lakh for VF7 (both ex-showroom). Bookings have been open since mid-July for ₹21,000, and both models will roll out from the brand’s new plant in Tamil Nadu. This local production should help VinFast compete directly with established Indian players rather than being seen as a premium import.

Maruti Suzuki Escudo – Expanding the SUV Family

Maruti Suzuki, the country’s largest carmaker, is also in the spotlight with a brand-new midsize SUV, likely to be called Escudo. The launch is set for September 3.

What makes the Escudo interesting is its position. It will be slightly larger than the Grand Vitara, offering extra space for families, yet priced competitively to attract a wide base of buyers. It will share the hybrid powertrain and platform with the Vitara, which means proven efficiency and reliability.

Unlike the Grand Vitara, which is sold via Nexa, the Escudo will be retailed from Arena dealerships. That’s a smart move, as it widens reach to smaller cities where Arena has a stronger presence. Prices are likely to start around ₹10 lakh (ex-showroom), which could make it one of the most affordable hybrid SUVs in India.

Mahindra Thar 3-Door Facelift – Keeping the Legend Fresh

The Mahindra Thar needs no introduction. For many, it’s the go-to lifestyle SUV. This September, the brand is giving the 3-door model a facelift, expected in the first week of the month.

Don’t expect a dramatic overhaul – the changes will be subtle. Spy shots suggest tweaks inspired by the 5-door Thar Roxx, along with new alloy designs and fresh detailing. Inside, the SUV will get an upgrade with a 10.25-inch floating infotainment system, which should make long drives more enjoyable.

Mechanically, it remains the same with its petrol and diesel options, available in both 2WD and 4WD. That’s actually good news, since the Thar’s rugged charm lies in what it already offers. For those who felt the Roxx was a bit too big, this facelifted 3-door keeps the original spirit alive.

Citroën Basalt X – More Premium Touches

Citroën is continuing its slow but steady expansion in India. The Basalt X, a new top-end trim, is coming mid-September, with bookings already open at ₹21,000.

While the overall design will remain familiar, this version is expected to bring new colors, extra features, and a slightly more premium feel. Power will come from the same 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine, paired with manual and automatic options.

The Basalt X is a way for Citroën to attract those who like the quirky styling but also want more creature comforts. It’s part of their “Shift into the New” strategy under Citroën 2.0, which signals a more feature-rich approach for the Indian market.

Volvo EX30 – Luxury EV at an Entry Price

On the luxury end, Volvo is gearing up to launch its most affordable EV yet, the EX30, this September. Priced around ₹50 lakh (ex-showroom), it gives Indian buyers a new entry point into the Volvo brand.

The EX30 carries a 69 kWh battery with a range of 480 km (WLTP). Using a 150 kW DC charger, it can charge fully in about 25 minutes – a big plus for city users who want less downtime. Volvo is also offering an 8-year warranty on the powertrain, which adds peace of mind for first-time EV buyers in the premium space.

Competing against the BMW iX1, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and BYD Sealion 7, the EX30 could be a strong contender if Volvo nails the pricing and after-sales service.

All in all, September 2025 looks like a festival for car enthusiasts. VinFast’s debut brings fresh competition in the EV space, Maruti’s Escudo strengthens the hybrid SUV game, Mahindra’s Thar facelift keeps the off-road charm alive, Citroën adds more style, and Volvo pushes luxury EVs within reach.

Whether you’re shopping for your first SUV or eyeing an upgrade to an electric, this month offers plenty of options. With festive discounts likely to follow, buyers could hardly ask for a better time to step into a showroom.
